War Footing Economy

when we refer to defeat in detail, it is assumed that the enemy
every obliging, has split their forces, fallen into convenient disarray
turned their throat to us one grouping at a time, held sway
that we might, in beautiful destruction, lay fire to their ignorance
or that our cleverness, more so than that clever enemy
achieved the same, a whirl of deception and maneuver
culminating in that for-ordained victory, rolling foot and metal
let us dissuade this vision, however delightful, and remember
our enemy is rarely them, but our painting of them, that dross thing
slave as ourselves to that mirage, morale, to tactic and strategy
indeed, that our detail in defeat appears perhaps as happenstance
whether by message or melancholy, spearing poorly across distance
displeased by inefficient treatment of tinea pedis or lacking music of same
load shifts rolling half-empty transit, standardization falling prey
to economies of scalar redistribution, ink bleeding into retribution
dreams cut short, rumors let long, no kingdom but for hearses
that red-sifted expectation of accelerated endless winning
where we crank the windlass and expect, forever, beginnings
of that glorious, tumultuous betrayal of anticipation, flawless seas
later derided under drink and that desperate heresy, accounting
