No Black Flag For Mourning
November 8, 2022
got the usual ramble this morning
some cussed old bugger thanking me
for my supposed beloved patriotism
all sucked and swirled around
god ��s glory in bitter tones of bad coffee
not even asking which god
or hell, which service
ain ��t got none of that
some folks do good work
maybe some gods too
but defining glorious dominance
by god and country swinging a flag
goes a bit far for poetic avarice
or hell, any old gold stuffing
ain ��t like some bears and donkeys
didn ��t rock the economy back and forth
just to see what might plummet out
like service manuals younger than me
weren ��t writ to claim of my own self, burning
so yeah, I ��ll hum a marching tune
or hell, maintain my iron
but by thunder and object permanence
we ��re here, we ��re goddamn well here
ain ��t goin �� nowhere, our plots are ours
and I ��ll love the folks doin �� the good work
hang a black cloth for the ones that sank to it
but that dirge patriotism eating its own
ain ��t got no voice in this choir
