behind the barn, now all tumble-down and humid
a well hugs the very bottom end of the ravine the cows avoid
water rising above ground level, to the very rock-lip
masonry always cold-condensing, no lid, and never dripping
where as a small child I whiled away my time, slipped from notice
hot days passing comfortably against that chill edifice
sipping small draughts from the tarnished silver ladle
left in well-worn slot between two inscriptions
script Latin from before the church ��s sway inland
a swell of letters in flourishes, nearly untouched by time
well rubbed yet unblemished by my thumbs, translated
here, and afar
comfortable workings of thought drowsing me twixt drinks
how if one listened carefully, and spoke slow, afar would answer
where here, in rumbled earth-thrum melody and cicada bowing
passed both inner and outer ring, circumferences reaching
just to the edge of the spoon-slot, but untouched by reaction
no argentum murk sweeping drifts of passages in note and annotation
each tone modified by deviation in circle, sines concording dances
step upon stance, rotation across evolution, cycle in lance waver
where I learned those sixteen misplaced languages now illuminated
humming and signing in my turn, o friends, o far things
hear these delightful summer days, washed across my tongue
