The Saddest Polka
October 4, 2022
with liberal application of phosphoric acid
in the form of a brand name carbonated beverage
normally reserved for cleaning prisoner holding areas
and road surfaces after traffic incidents
we attempted to placate the tuba
exterior first, going from sad tarnish
to nicked and bent shine, all the better
for what it overcame
interior, because someone said �� why not
liquid went in, nothing came out
liquid went in, nothing came out
spit valve, no result
liquid went in, nothing came out
someone got a garden hose, another a bird bath
still, nothing coming out, though from within
a small gurgle, an echo, and silence
we left it out in the rain, but brought it back in
when it became clear it was eating the sparrows
fearing that it might also vanish mail
what with being leaned up by the post box on the porch
later, clean enough, probably not too cursed
we played the saddest polka, wishing well to those sparrows
and also one letter we addressed �� to whom it may concern
in careful calligraphic notation, with the good paper
the good ink, too, of our most beloved melody
right down the bell
weight of the world upon our shoulders
never increasing from thirteen pounds, four ounces
now negotiating contracts for new tunes in reliquary dalliance
letters arriving hidden amidst folders, offering trades
no frightening horrors, just simple things
music for music for music
the occasional wing
and no more cola
