Esham Obit

sometimes in the mothership craze at zero three hundred
we remember those first confusing deliveries, how it came to pass
we learned before cremation that Esham
in their infinite charity, had donated their body
not just to science, but to everything they could think of
queries rolling in like box-top prize claims
sometimes three or more at once from the same system
we understand in your time of mourning
that this may be difficult, and are grateful
in so many flavors, letterbox overflowing
lid blown somewhere down lakeside avenue
porch buried, a small kitten, bewildered, mewing
skidding across condolence after condolence ��
and when would your family mind us picking up the body
had we known Esham, had they still lived here
had they ever lived here, it might have been traumatic
instead, we adopted the kitten
recycled some six hundred thousand mailings
politely replied to the post office
we weren ��t sure who Esham was, but
if they felt they might like to stop delivering
we ��d understand, but, they claimed
their pride was on the line
six years later, the occasional memorial still arrives
we are sorry for your loss, and when would your family
somehow sitting illegally on a corpse all this time
mind scheduling a pickup, early mornings before the heat
are generally best for all involved
we ��ve named the kitten Esham Obit
and explain they ��re not up for adoption
