Summer Reason

walking the old back roads of my childhood again I find the paths rearranged
here, where the dirt road closed the loop, a powerline cut, a stream, an empty
terrain where no road might ever have lain, though with some climbing
scrambling over glacial till and larger granite erratics, I connect the dots
in another circle round the mountain pond, there too the tracks are gone
old mill slumbering below the hill erased from foundation, slabs and dam
likewise lifted out of time and grind, grist of nothingness, chase and race
replaced with smooth-slick face at ten degrees, natural in all pallor
ferns sporulating in sun-lit draws beside, memory shadowing in how it was
listening from the next vale over, and still, just at the edge, hearing the wheel
how the great-grandfolks would drive horse and cart that way, complain
coming home, how the grade meant riding the stick brake down
in walkabout time, rubbing away runaway prevention, worried equine shying
coming home is wide white eyes, knowing not just predators slipping close
but known routes sliding underfoot, a wandering sway to the everywhere
one ��s kitchen adrift, the long repaired favorite cleaver, done up in glue
string wrapped weight of perfection missing, night-passed, replaced
some different always-loved effacement showing somehow we ��ve always
this chalk, been vegetarian, never putting blade to meat, never unseating
however much back of the tongue remembers sweet blood insights
flame and iron grill, fat-protected, never rusting, now another construction
out-of-doors gathering somewhere between fire pit and other pitting
even the games of croquet folds roque rolling across each other ��s canted lawn
both played in manic competition, whucking balls into the lake
that ��s only sometimes there, happy voices in ancestry, comfortably shifted
in time to take those savory wakes, one foot after, one afore
