Endurance Stance

we who stand steady at the gates
imperiled by our sneezes
pull every muscle known
our respective races devoting
endless study to our suffering
discovering unheard new strength
in each of our conditions
eventually one sciencer saying
this happens every year
have you considered fighting pollen
three years of off duty fights
entire fields laid to waste
we were handed masks
now fiercer in countenance
we who stand steady build muscle
instead by endless drilling
only occasionally rolling in fields
for sweet memory
