Two Strings
December 6, 2021
when I was small �� and that ��s a key element to any start
fell in love a burl �� boy, girl, nothing there �� burl
from the heart of an oak �� all twisted up, bored in tree
came out to visit �� soaked in the rain uncaring, staring
as you do �� because it ��s always as though it ��s as one does
summer dreams shelved �� without that choosing ground
self-carved things not permitted �� when one needs license for being
much less choosing �� parser card punches just so
punch up, not down �� figurative standing on those narrow shoulders
carded just so �� for wool, for drinking, for flesh, for speaking
but the punch is a sphere �� in the heart of one ��s own volition
one good bounce �� power-desk headwards expanded
cullings from old offices �� shiny rectangle where swan clean through
railroad spike the tree took up �� blinks every nth second
overhead fluorescents skip-twitching �� own heart near stopped on scent
palm to iron �� old whispers of I am the rat that died in the shoot
when the hand takes mine �� rifting edges unbound
we are both of us speaking �� learned language in tethers
we are the root that rose �� we are the dream that chose
we are the hole that forgot �� well punched
we are those who remember �� hands faster than those who would sunder
