The Good Thing

the good thing about waking up is the no-memory brandless trash coffee
found under the back stairwell of an 1838 Victorian manor in 1973
lost between a pair of toolboxes in the shed
when it was opened and determined to contain something
at least vaguely resembling ground bean with no room for the extra brass screws
removed carefully from great aunt something something ��s wardrobe
said screws also now lost, frittered away in an aluminum tin full of tool rust preventing oil
brown question resealed and thrown out, missing the basket
spending from 1973 to 2018 in the spider webs it rolled into following that failed layup
re-acquired during cleaning, and in a moment of fuck-it, test-scooped into a two-gallon steel stock pot
brought to a boil not in optimism, but in confusion
proving to be so utterly gods-forsaken awful that it ��s now a punishment reminder
that the good thing about waking up is having remembered to purchase coffee
so as not to be here
again
each time a question of both self and not-the-nectar
closer to that fretful moment of maybe taking pride in that rarest of fates
not forsaken, chosen
because that ��s not coffee
