Colic Passes
December 25, 2020
come to the gym each morning
little Nell ��s working the weight
smallest one in the place, Nell �� and the kettlebell
both of ��em maybe about as old and rail thin
as one can get and still be whispering the drills
same thing every morning, green plastic thermos
up next to rack, no partner
they ��d gestured on once with the rubbered iron
mid-swing when offered, said nothing
Nell never says nothing
so in, pause, crack the pack
grin the grin, hand over the habitual greeting
same hand mixed tea I make me own self
honey pot, and a pint of cream
pot and pint always clean on the way out
the lightest scent of peat I ��ve never quite matched
to whatever they mix in when I look away
join the endurance sharks
equipment humming away
run the run, grind the grind
chat the chat, Jim and Laney ��s kids
still no colic, still raising hell
four months in
and run the run
and run
catch a glint to the entry
young punks at the gate
manager backed off
telling them not to mess with folks
you know how it goes in the bad gyms
how they ��re made of not stepping in
poke Laney, Laney pokes Jim
and little Nell glances our way
fragment of a soldier ��s headshake
just brushing their hair
lets slip the iron
a gentle arc
misses manager, misses punks
clunks between soundless, coating to carpet
where Laney mutters, ��a ring, �� eyebrow up
a stutter of other things, a spot of punk green, punk red
all turned to small Nell, and gone
just ffft �� Nell steps delicate
retakes the kettlebell
retakes their place
touches tea to forehead
a spot of red
tonight I ��m baking honey bread
