Shallow Ground

I met the horror halfway home
they took the other half
brought me sweet peach consommé
filled a relaxing bath
joined me low at dinner time
and high in candlelight repast
stole well my heart away from me
settled down to break their fast
now here despair reaps not my shore
nor at my door the soot-black cur
instead their whuffles and their snores
ensure I weep alone no more
