Apples in my Cheeks

I was told in my youth that silence was equivalent to death
that when faced with the unconscionable, I must speak
in bravery claim my freedom, hang its flagging upon my walls
that when threatened, questioned by those who would presume my actions
I might take some little death and gain the ground one holds dear
before in speaking true laying clear a path from under assumption
these banners on my wall, then �� they tighten clear
and today, I must quote the words that allow me my silence
lest my silence be presumed not short death, but long
that silence be confession, lest I remember that key to safety
speaking loud to keep it
now, when my word would be my own, it is stolen from me
now, when my quiet would be my home, it is held to my throat
now, when my home would be my harbor
these banners upon my walls listen
