An Appropriate Mix

when you made yourself a costume that spat the image of my mother's best gingham dress
when you pasted feathers to your head and naked whopped and screamed
my shock was a voluminous thing, rolling through me sick tides
did you forget her church, her ancestor's time at war, my father's time
with a battle ax swung in wondrous arcs
the marks on the door
later claimed burned in by the gods themselves
all maple and vine
did you mock me and mine, come to tell us we were subhuman
worthless things of drink and despair, non-thinking, rag-people
all chitter and corn
and your dance was alien gold
when I'd vomited up this fearsome thing in me
that you might next come to my house, root about in my attic
crack the oaken chest
and ferret out that very dress, well
I swore I'd pick up my father's axe
and place you quiet
under the maple at the corner of my field
all alien and gold
and when you never came, I was undone
whose hate now, then, do I claim master
for this will of mine I've tailored, unbending,
unending preservation of self
against intrusion
with you, your brother
but where you danced different, he claimed specifics
that I and mine were chattel, ignorant, dirty things
it was his hand I broke in my mother's chest
his neck I pressed so tender
caressed, and set clear
his blood that fed my autumn trees
all alien and gold
and now I see you've made yourself a costume
spitting the image of me and mine, perhaps
and your dance is no less shocking
but you see me human, clear
all alien and gold
