my problem has always been, in a fight to believe utterly
that the blade in my head, the steel in my hand, flows invulnerable
blocking steel as often with flesh as with steel, breaking blades
with the back of my hand, the crook of my arm, letting the enemy
find herself all the way in, find himself gaining ground, knowing
my own weapon always doing its job, probing death's ground
working in illusion that weapon matters, that steel never grows tired
and at some point I always find I've grabbed the blade, comfortable
that my own weapon was a lie, that there was no weapon, only purchase
and immortality in the passage of now, only now, fighting
in death's ground, the only place to begin, and the problem
to believe utterly, is this - I am always in death's ground
the immortal now glittering slow and synergistic, there is no weapon
and the weapon is a lie, and there is no weapon - I am waiting
waiting to die, but always living - this whole living is a lie
