now and again I remember when the night was clear as winter dawn
frost upon the cicatrice, black blood where nails drove in
christ's repose of vinegar still wet upon the sponge
but each body hangs suspended, one more body - what's one more body?
and the romans are dead, yes long ago dead
and the cataphracts no longer charge
and the winter moor is but a moor
now and again the message is clear when the torpor lifts for a night
chill goose skin where nail's spiked, children take warning, run
there are no martyrs any more, no cold to meet the morn
but each signboard hangs upended, one more warning - what's one more warning?
and children's corpses make righteous warning
and parent's corpses make righteous warning
and the winter moor is but a moor
now and again I remember when the night was pure as winter dawn
frost upon the grassy plain, moonlight calm on the grassy plain
thirsty words of vinegar still wet upon my tongue
but each sacrifice begets sacrifice, one more youth - what's one more youth?
and the saviors are dead, yes long ago dead
and the children are raped and sewn
and the winter moor is but a moor
prey, the cataphracts return
