Burning Time
September 15, 1999
when the planes on those shaggy amber eyes come apart
and all your surgery can't pull them back
the trench and the black plastic stick slips
crow's feet each by contorted unit
where a smile once sat
when the mirror, lucid mirror crushes down to powdered glass
all the fragments a drug injection of yourself
the black plastic lips may purse a minute
flat leather laces and teeth that snap
where a smile once sat
when cheeks drag antiquity across the molten track
and your tear's furrows spread rivers on the map
a seven-minute track lays petals and crystals
mortal and pestle to stereographic trap
where a smile once sat
lush, that crucifix injection, repair, repent, and resurrection
