Whip
August 10, 1999
in the bored up corners of mind unkempt
a sallow whippoorwill voice is spent
singing one first melody
so like the last, so like them all
a penchant for the whippoorwill
to mourn the dead before they're dead
in comfort laden streets of gold
across the velvet of the mold
a single voice like the whippoorwill does carry on the call
he with me now; be with me ��
its tremolo is reedy
that who I fought so hard to keep with avenues and pleasures
acres of land and a place to sleep, did measure me, unmeasured
so silent where the whippoorwill did cleanly sing
so salient where the dour wing did make of my song the greedy
so scavenger this mourning thing, to mourn and make mourn needy
rest a little
another song will come
to fill the hollow of the last one
rest a little song
rest a little, under hill
and come the morn, another song
less silent now, less needy
