in the garden I went walking looking long for my dead sister
bleeding from the poison that grew back among the flowers
and I knew that when I found her she would comfort all my questions
for my sister's lonely province was of dogwood in ash springtimes
and I surely saw her footprints there amidst grasses overgrowing
but the stepstones went in circles then swinging back around again
became part of their own question when they ended
maybe you have seen her selling all she has to gather
blowing kisses and confession with her short blouse and her offers
and perhaps she'll ask you gently when you've spent your final chapter
will you trust her giving nature and the memory of flowers
and I surely saw her footprints there amidst sodium and garbage
but the cobblestones were wounded in the circle of the city then
became part of their own memory of home
in the church I wandered long and asked this question of the fathers there
have you seen my sister by the shore of your candle lighted altar
and they said she turned her back on them before the light had spoken
for my sister's last possession was of nectar in the morning
and I thought her footprints wandered somewhere near to the confession
but curtains black hung long like cinders brushed on brows of dying memory
shutting into silence their first own
