Why Knight?
July 14, 1998
the white of the knight is a lie at best
I prefer the black, and rest, fell below his house
crest of my family upon my back, and flag upon my chest
white's minions know my waking best, eyes ashield
choked cold amidst the funeral sons I yield, glass eyes ponder him
half turned in shame, one foot already running
in lonely shelter here I weep, soldiered within his fortress
keep upon the hill, rising from my nation's ashes
my path was jumbled - or perhaps careless
here, then, I stumble first, thirst an iron in my gullet
some things did not deserve the light, some passes foggy best were kept
street lamps dimmed, sashed with mist
and back where songs forgotten blemished
I forgot - why my footsteps led here - where the light fails not
my flag now branded on my face, a licorice to savor
my lips parted in mark uncertain, barriers raised
I wait for my savior, be he flight unhurried
black knight, lie my rest upon your banner
