Le'c'venish Moor
March 15, 1996
when crossing faith and le'c'venish moor
clean bleak houses, white and pure
shone dead bleached cold against the night
seven score and more I'm sure
in each house a sicklight burned
clashing faith with oil churned
a spiral plague from off the waves
upon each door a cross - god saves
I gashed my eyes
blotted out with pith
each hardwall'd house
cared not for this, vast empty sight --
upon this land a blight, rest sure
nary a one made long
lasts strong against the sea -- nor stored
old wizened wives had claimed for me
"le'c'venish stays, outcast forgotten
if so could we all be," then
pointed west with trembling hands
"young man, that way breathes oblivion
this day gone, and four more sure
seven score their sins before, impure"
ancient crone, hand guarding chest
claims, "breath comes hard for we the bless'd
the lord brought forth, and takes clean his errs
the old, the young, as one, at rest"
while down 'crost faith and le'c'venish moor
the houses pierce the night like bones, bleached pure
from behind their pale outlined glow, thick coughing
vows and supplications ere
upon each door a cross
or more, mother, father, daughter, scores
repent alone in silence -- death's sinecure
down across le'c'venish moor
I set my way, and read by scores
doors laid out like books, gilt pure
"May the lord have mercy upon us"
lined below with blood - silent sacrifice
what caught no ear's despair
seven score and more repair'd
