Little Sister
October 30, 1995
when I found her
she'd a plastic bag over her head
taste of old shit
hung in the back of my throat
tightening the room's grip
yellow dim spackle and curtain
lost behind the plastic
elastic about her neck cut in
air in that room fetid, full
unmoving, unable to move
and I felt her final moments
graying out in sweat and hot toddy
pulling on the bag's supply
like a horse at feeding
grain in the bag a mournful air - like me
gut knotted, unable to muster
small things, dry heaves and shivers
that I had known this thing's voice
lips slick like vinyl in plastic wrap
telling me cancer had come
do not enter - ever this place
nor send your sons
yellow air squeezing me out
her corpse on the blankets, wraith thin
gone to wraith, taste thin, gruel stained face
remember me not - this way intent
she'd said - better to forget this place
and on...
yellow curtains limp
ragged like her edges, cut-
I listened not-
her taste, my friend
at death was shit
