our grandfathers were wiser than we in preserving
they used mustard gas in the old refrigerators
same thing they tested on cats in the old days
to see if they could eliminate the troops signed out in trenches
lines of them planted, harvested, planted again
forgotten, like blister agent now keeping iced memories
last night's vegetables fresh for tomorrow-
a manana we say, and forget, outmoded
old refrigerators and gas that killed like frost
our grandfathers, themselves then sons, remembering
blocks of ice and how their grandfathers would say
our grandfathers were wiser than we in preserving
