Faith in the Fall
October 23, 1995
I have no funeral organ - to account for this drone
constant blessed consecration - of humming here
buried as deep - hungry for light - as I can get
into the city works - lower than the red line
lower than the blue - this place is mine, hear?
no entry - if I can seal myself - deep enough
won't you forget me - eventually maybe just
leave me alone to memories - static below despite
dim where I left you - to sleep the innocent cleansing
carry me - down below the funeral pipes - the drone
goes on - endless - lifeblood of the city above me
I need never face again - remember me - defiance
death came not softly by for my kind - just stopped
once down along the line - danced a jig of one step
grinning all the while - wouldn't take me - remember
my name - in lieu of all else - remember my name
in lieu of death - a becoming of a kind - waiting for
supersaturation to form - the soaking in - tepid
shallows mirroring form - fading - growing tendrils
like Usher - I hear the city's faintest - breath
droning - like the wail of the funeral organ - mourners
debasing themselves - god forgives - cries for me
to god - before I left you - teaching your children
to fear mine - sacrament impossibly enough - to forget
remember? - my name - was nothing to me - before your
own - children - close their eyes without asking - won't see my
eyes weap iron - below your city of light - I meter a jig
with one step - and pass you by - god - for like you
I am death - pulling slow solemn - one pace at a time
humming - to funeral pipes - joined to drums of life
wonder not - to remember my name - I shall not
touch you - or yours tonight - drone obliterates my
reality you remembered - my shame - to let you see
me - this poison'd form - with wings of blight
upon growing - no flowers - bloom within my wandering
sight
