Low Armageddon
October 20, 1995
working man gets down
from his last door to door steps
stumbles, sees his most recent woman
smiling where he left her
dies an ancient death
somewhere outside of downtown New York City,
somehow avoiding
the harsh glare of the headlights
from the parkway
off on the east side
where all the shootings took place
last year's end
during the snow and ice
that stopped traffic for days at a time -
even the snowplows
with their overloads of sand which her husband drives
over the long winter wondrous months
when even the sounds of the shots
or his death at egress -
muffled by the fall
of the snow so absorbent
to sound this time of year,
what with the temperature now dipping down
below negative eighteen,
wind kicking in that extra effort
to freeze her smile when she turns away -
never to see him collapse
like a bag of split ends from the barber's shop
where the trucks stop
to cart what trash her husband has
yet to plow under with his
sparking blade across the tar -
she walks down the street almost silent
in this hushed hour one particle
out of what's now said to be more than seven million souls
gathered at the balance of collapsing isolation
as most of New Jersey listens
to the pressing lack of sound in the snow -
breathing grey air
waiting for Manhattan to part its mooring -
bedrock from outcrop -
shake the earth without a sound
as it sinks desperately into the sea
