It's technically summer, but, given that my partner is a teacher, I've always seen summer as that season starting after the end of the school year. Which, for us, happened today. And so now the next two months stretch out in front of us.
A week or so seeing her family out west; trips south to the States, twice. Maybe three times, depending on whether some super tentative and somewhat unserious plans with friends play out or not. I was hoping to visit my family, but my grandmother had a very bad fall a few months ago, needing hospitalization, and surgery. She's been healing slower than expected. And given that she's now in her 90s, things become more complicated. She needs a home care aide. My parents are looking. It's not a good time to come out. Maybe in the fall.
As much as I'm disappointed by this (I haven't seen my family in a couple years now - they're several hours away by plane, and my dad can't do plane travel right now), I'm just going to hope her healing improves, and lean into our summer plans. Lots of card games, lots of baseball (televised and live!), lots of live music.
Apart from this, we've been working on training with our youngest dog. Money well spent on the private session with a trainer. Our dog's less reactive, no longer automatically barking at dogs on walks. An enormous win. I'm still walking the dogs separately in the mornings, and this is helping.
Summers here are weird because they seem so short. When our winters are bad, they last six months of the year. Summers here can be intense, but they're fleeting in comparison. A couple of months before the weather starts to turn, and we're digging up our vegetable garden, stashing the potatoes underneath our basement stairs. Best to enjoy the sun and good times however long they're here.
