What a summer, right?
When I was younger, Summer was a little bit magical.
No school! Less stuff to worry about!
As an adult, though, I *really* like the fall.
No work conferences! Less hot!
Historically, this time of year has been pretty hard for me. It's always a welcome breath
of fresh air when the air chills a little, and it no longer feels like late summer, and
instead like early fall. It's hard to pinpoint exactly what that feeling is, but you know
it when you see it.
Work has been work. I wasn't doing amazing at my job over August, to be totally honest,
but now that it's cooling down a bit more I'm able to focus more on the task at hand. It
just feels like, in a subtle way, the burnout and malaise I was feeling is getting peeled
back.
I know people who have depression in the fall and winter have seasonal depressive
disorder. I have no idea if this is like an opposite version of that or what.
My tablet I'd been using for facebook and some parts of mastodon broke, and the
replacement part was an eye watering $400. I'm not willing to pay that much, so first I
tried to buy an off brand screen that claimed compatibility for $40, only to receive a
screen of the wrong size and connectors, lol. eBay is a wild west for that sort of thing
so I was not honestly surprised. I kept the ebay screen and touch digitizer in case I can
figure out what it can go to, and I've heard promising things about using the usb-c
display out on my broken samsung tablet to bypass the screen entirely and run it in dex
mode as some kind of abomination between a desktop and a tablet.
I have not done that yet. In the meantime, I bought a Xiaomi Redmi Pad for $200 on
amazon. It's got decent specs! Right now I'm waiting for an infuriating timed lockout
that Xiaomi put on the bootloader of their devices to run out and then I'm going to flash
it with LineageOS. I'm going with Lineage for a few reasons:
concept code and android malware to see if it's generic or specific to a vendor fork
bloatwre to try and get some ad cash. I really just want a tablet for a handful of uses,
and don't really need all the added giblets that vendors ship their tablets with
Right now my only real plans are to visit my in-laws for thanksgiving, and to go to
california for a thing in a week or so for a long weekend. I think my husband has already
got plane tickets to go out of state to see his dad but, if not, maybe I can see if we can
snag amtrak tickets for cheap and/or free with the points I've accumulated >:3
The local walgreens in theory gets the next covid booster this week or next, so I've been
waiting around for that. Once I've got boosted, I would really like to go to at least one
haunted house attraction. If the covid numbers are bad enough to not want to risk it, I
want to get a few close friends together and go night hiking or something. Just gotta be
festive but in a way that won't give you long covid, you know?
I need to seriously clean house with my various linodes. I've got a lemmy server I've
been kind of half-standing up for forever, but I set it up wrong, it has no users and
can't federate so really it's just a cadaver. I need to purge that node, start fresh and
see what I can do. Maybe kbin? Or maybe I'll see if lemmy's docs have gotten a little
easier to follow.
I'm also working on learning Godot. I have no massive project I'm immediately trying to
work on, mostly using it as a good way of keeping my programming muscles in shape.
With that said, I've got a few ideas for small games I might make if I can figure it out.
I've always wanted to see how hard it would be to make a full shmup game :)
Now that it's getting colder outside, I've got a kigurumi sewing pattern that's been
sitting in a drawer in my living room for most of the year. I need to pull it out and see
if I can make a kigurumi.
The only way to not suck is to try and possibly suck at it right?
