First Gemlog! - Thinking about the internet

Oh look, I can just blog here instead of having to set up Yet Another Server!

Gotta love geminispace.

I've been thinking a lot about the internet lately.

Mostly how it seems like it's all been turned into a platform for endless ads

and enshittification. Not everything needs ads, not everything needs stories,

not everything needs a corporate overlord to handle all communications, right?

Granted I say that when this server is hosted on a cloud provider,

but they get very little say in what I do and, either way, it's a little hard

to self host anymore without doing way too much planning.

Anyway, I'm tired of it. Facebook is still good-ish in the right circles, but

even the particular corner of facebook shitposting I was part of is going dormant.

And that's not to say anything about the constant ads.

I pay for Youtube Premium to avoid ads, but you could hardly tell anymore

with the fact that every video now has an ad break for Hello Fresh or Factor 27 or

Raid Shadow Legends or whatever startup company is still in the "VC money is unlimited"

phase of their lifecycle. So now I have to pay for Nebula just to get a chance to

skip THOSE ads as well, but sometimes that ad space is still taken up with a voice over

talking about how nice it was of me to pay for Nebula. I like supporting creators whenever

possible but there comes a certain point where I'm like PLEASE JUST LET ME WATCH YOUR VIDEO

IN PEACE YOU DON'T HAVE TO MAKE IT WEIRD PLEASE I'M PAYING YOU SPECIFICALLY TO SHAVE THAT

EXTRA 6 MINUTES OFF OF YOUR 3 MINUTE VIDEO

I'm on Pillowfort for some blogging needs, though I usually use it as a repository for movie

reviews. Maybe not the intended purpose of it, but I like using it for that since

it feels less stuffy than one of the actual websites designed for that.

I was shopping for an AV receiver for my TV and ended up picking one up that

had "no wifi or streaming apps" listed as a downside. Personally, I found that to be a huge

upside because that means I'm not likely to get locked out of my device due to some

server shutting down at random.

Anyway, I don't know where this is going. I was just feeling a little pessimistic and thought to

myself that the only way it's gonna get better is if I work towards that better future.

So here I am.

Writing out a gemlog in nano over ssh.

Bliss.

PS: anyone know a good, active MUD to play? Hit me up on mastodon with your recommendations

if you're one of the select people who read these things.

I'm still working out how to set up a kind of commenting/guest book system here.

I'm thinking maybe I set up an email address that forwards all email contents to a text file

that I can keep at the bottom of my capsule, but time will tell if I actually go through with it.
