Hendrikus Wilhelmus Maria "Dick" Schoof (Dutch: [ɦɛnˈdrikʏs ʋɪlˈɦɛlmʏs maˈrijaː dɪk sxoːf] ; born 8 March 1957) is a Dutch civil servant and spy chief serving as prime minister of the Netherlands after being nominated during the 2023–2024 Dutch cabinet formation. He previously served as secretary-general of the Ministry of Justice and Security from 2020 to 2024, as National Coordinator for Security and Counterterrorism from 2013 to 2018, and director-general of the General Intelligence and Security Service from 2018 to 2020. On 2 July 2024, Schoof was sworn in as prime minister of the Netherlands in the Schoof Cabinet, succeeding Mark Rutte.
Hurricane Beryl is a currently active Atlantic tropical cyclone currently over the Gulf of Mexico. Beryl is the second named storm, first hurricane, and first major hurricane of the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season. It is also the earliest-forming Category 5 Atlantic hurricane on record. After forming on June 28 in the Main Development Region, it began rapidly intensifying as it moved west through the central tropical Atlantic. On July 1, Beryl made landfall on the island of Carriacou in Grenada as a high-end Category 4 hurricane, causing extensive damage. The hurricane intensified further as it entered the Caribbean Sea, peaking as a Category 5 hurricane early the next morning before gradually weakening to a Category 2 hurricane again on July 5, just prior to making landfall in southeastern Mexico.
On 2 July 2024, a stampede occurred at the conclusion of a Hindu religious event in the village of Mughal Garhi in Hathras district of the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. The incident resulted in the deaths of 123 people, most of whom were women and children, and the hospitalisation of at least 150 others. The incident occurred when about 250,000 people showed up for the event, which had permission for at most 80,000.

A civil war between two rival factions of the military government of Sudan, the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) under Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) under the Janjaweed leader Hemedti, began during Ramadan on 15 April 2023. Fighting has been concentrated around the capital city of Khartoum and the Darfur region. As of 21 January 2024, at least 13,000–15,000 people had been killed and 33,000 others were injured. As of 5 July 2024, over 7.7 million were internally displaced and more than 2.1 million others had fled the country as refugees, and many civilians in Darfur have been reported dead as part of the Masalit massacres.
