I know not everyone is using Linux, but it seems like this sort of thing would be made easier by journald. AFAIK all entries are time-stamped and log rotation happens transparently.
EDIT: Actually, come to think of it, those are probably fairly common features amongst syslog daemons.

@totroptof - thanks, I forgot that journald can display logs, I always think of it as a way of making logs. Yeah, it seems like it should be the place to do that, and I will have to look there today.
P.S. Is anyone here not using Linux?
