I spent some time in a big RV early this century. Campgrounds are not cheap, unless you are boondocking in which case you need to deal with lack of power and water. We have better batteries these days, but it stops being fun quickly.
'vanlife' was not a thing back then, most RVer were elderly and not particularly interesting. I wonder what the scene is these days. I have a Ford Transit Connect with a pop-top tent, but only camped out a handful of times...

The main problem, I believe is not the technical aspect. On land you can easily resupply should your water tank leaks, out in the open sea, you are in some life threatening trouble.
The main problem is harassment by other people. But there should be solutions, I’ve seem people made there van look like trade van. You could always park in secluded area.
