Everything meta about the Geminispace, which doesn't fit into s/Gemini, because it's not related to the protocol or Gemtext, and also doesn't fit the more specialized subspaces. E.g. announcements, shutdown notices, random info, even idle chatter.

[preformatted] Building a Better Text World: Notes on Reviving ASCII Culture Gemini is famously a text-first protocol, one that improved upon Gopher by shifting to UTF-8 encoded gemtext. That being said, there remains a lot we can do to improve text culture. The purpose of this document is to briefly outline the general features of what ASCII is, should be, and could be. It is not complete. Follow up these leads with your own investigations. What is ASCII? ASCII, like fascism, is a term...

The Revolution Will Not Be In Proportional Width Font β [gemini link] In the above link you will find what I believe to be a completely counterproductive and silly approach to thinking about terminals and ASCII. 1. List a set of problems in an unserious way. 2. Propose a vague solution (paraphrase: "something other than a terminal"). This approach to text will lead to the following behavior: Not taking the terminal seriously, and not solving problems for the terminal. Or, waiting for the...

This week into Geminispace has been very addictive... π I am seriously thinking to set aside all the HTML stuff... Between BBS and Station there is plenty of interaction. I found, or rediscovered, the Geminispace is more engaging and less distracting, there isn't anything to consume so you don't waste time scrolling for nothing... π€

Things appear to be very slow here in terms of new posts... is anyone keeping track of overall Gemini activity?

New forum β Hello, I have launched another forum for Gemini/Titan at [gemini link] I would welcome feedback and suggestions from people here, especially in regard to display and formatting. My inspiration is a vbulletin-esque Web forum, so hopefully it is interesting in its difference from this board. It is a work in progress, so there are several features I've not yet added, like PMs and permissions for moderators (separate from normal users or administrators). I hope its basic...

I just read this advice in geminispace.info: "geminispace.info search engine will shut down on 1st June 2024". Does it refer to a maintenance shut down or it's about the end of the site?

Wrote a tool to convert graphics to text art in the style of shaded block textart seen on textart.sh. It's pretty simple and scales output to <100 pixels for rectangular pixel art and <50 for square pixel. This works out to a max of 100 columns. You can feed it http or https URLs, but not gemini. Sorry, I'm just using the default file handling. Hope it's useful for some other people. [gemini link]

What to do about lost pages? β I'm relatively new to a web that is smol/self-hosted. I'm enjoying the experience, so thank you. I've run into an issue (feature?), and wonder how you all dealt with it: Ephemerality. There is content on the fedi/smol web that could be lost forever. On the www, there's quite a bit of redundancy. If I can't find the article/story I'm looking for on one site, a quick search reveals multiple places that it's been backed up. I can't really think of many things that...

Image size β How large should images be in the Geminispace? On the WWW, I would just link to photos straight from my phone, but those files can approach 5 MB. Does anyone have a soft mental limit of, say, 1 MB? Or smaller? 5 MB is probably overkill; I may go smoller, but I don't know that I want to be smaller.

β Where in the World? Past Puzzles
Now play any day's puzzle in πΊ Where in the World? game! β I finally got around to adding the ability to play any day's puzzle in my geography guessing game Where in the World?! I also added "Go to Next puzzle" links after you have finished one. This makes it really easy to go on a geography guessing binge and play the 500+ puzzles that already exist!

How do you keep on top of new capsules in gemini space?

About Gopher and Gemini Content β Is there any high quality content in the Gopher space that is not mirrored in the Gemini space? "High quality" is of course subjective, but anything that would soon appear on the common aggregators (Antenna, Cosmos etc.) or on the forums (BBS, Station etc.) and that would either entince debate or be seen as a reference by many would do. I ask this because I fail to get friendly with Gopher. Again it's subjective, but I really miss encryption, reflowing and the...

New "Certificate and Key Validator" service to Kennedy β I added a "Certificate and Key Validator" service to Kennedy. This helps you figure out if a certificate/key change on a capsule is from a innocent change by the capsule owner, or a possible MITM attempt. Read me here: [gemini link] If I ever build a Gemin client, I would probably build something like this into it. (with a perference to disable). As in, if you access a capsule and it's cert/key is different, my client would check with...

openid in geminispace i was saying that there is no need in social networks since internet is a social network. we have sites, the updates is possibre to fetch anonymously via rss. but if we wanted to comment with our identity, then openid was the way. so rss+openid solves almost all what we use activity pub for (i was gonna write except private messages, but even private can be done). if we adopt something like openid or openid in geminispace, i think that will cover most of our needs....

Station BBS looks broken β [gemini link] - I want to register there, I have succeed creating a user certificate, sucessfully entered my nickname. And then I stuck, only option available for me now is the button called "Join station", which is strange, i have already joined. What should I do next? Is it normal behavior for Station BBS? Can I contact Station admin for assistance?

Infinite Scrolling and hyper personalization are evil β IΒ miss the old BBS and forums long gone the few that exist are like ghost town. Once in a blue moon I go back and I remember vividly certain topics or obscure knowledge bits. The ability to navigate and map the information with section, broken down into topics and comments. The main page was the same for everybody and everybody knew what the other would get. Those are two things missing from the modern web. Both infinite scrolling and...

Whatever happened to Konpeito? β I was looking around the corners of Geminispace that I used to frequent, when I discovered that the Konpeito site is down, and seemingly has been for a while. A few people are hosting backup mirrors, but I'm interested to know what happened behind the scenes, if anyone knows anything. Mainly, I'm wondering why the project ended, and if there's any sort of alternative, sister project, or successor!

It's sad that Gemini is so small, but i think a slow growth is better than the boom that happened when DistroTube a nd a bunch of YouTubers made videos about it. A lot of people joined but then left afterwards. I did discover Gemini through them thought.

Google's Gemini AI β What do you all think of this? Does this naming choice have the potential to hurt the Gemini protocol? Or do you not care?
