When rules and laws facilitate the transfer of resources from the less powerful to the more powerful, then they must be respected at all cost. When they don’t, often the laws are changed — or “might makes right” — and the resources flow to the powerful anyway. · 3 years ago

Then it sounds to me as if they have no basis for expecting IUSN to have sought their consent ahead of time, unless there was a clause saying as much somewhere in the transfer agreement. · 3 years ago

@lykso From the article, they gave up control of it voluntarily in 2003 (they signed it off to IUSN), and then 10 years later IUSN signed it off to (Swedish) IIS since the domains are are mostly Swedish, and to a lesser extent Norwegian. · 3 years ago

"In November 2018, the government of Niue initiated a lawsuit against the IIS in the Stockholm District Court to obtain control over the domain. It stated that the Foundation had 'taken over Niue's .nu domain without consent in 2013,' resulting in a significant loss of revenue for the country."

Sure, that does seem like a problem. Also: how is this even possible? How would one steal a TLD? Seems like there would be some sort of process in place that would prevent that from happening. · 3 years ago

They are explicitly concerned about lost revenues, and that's revenues almost entirely from scandinavian registration fees. Seems clear enough that if owning the TLD would not also come with the registration fees from millions of scandinavian domains, but just a few thousand niuian domains, they would be fine with someone else managing it. This isn't really a case of "the west is evil", but rather "trying to impose country borders on a network that inherently doesn't respect them is silly" · 3 years ago

Not sure "The West" is really a coherent concept. Will humans ever learn? Will my cat ever learn? Will I ever learn? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ · 3 years ago
