A place to discuss everything OpenBSD.
Finally the new Broadcom WiFi card arrived for my old Macbook Air, so I can give OpenBSD a proper go! I am so excited about it. Installed the new card, flashed install75.img, off I go, wish me luck!

How sucky is OpenBSD installation for the first time? I managed to boot up my old laptop (An 1.8ghz Acer from 2008-ish?), and I thought Iād give OpenBSD a crack on it. What do I need to be looking out for, coming from a MacOS / Linux background?

living with arcticfox browser on OpenBSD ā I have been using arcticfox for few years now, it gives me a good old software vibe. My old computer is an intel Skylake. The browser builds and runs ok abeit a bit slow. I think this is because, on OpenBSD building arcticfox with -O2 will produce crashing binary (-O1 is ok, even the README says to only use -O0). I recently got a new Alderlake based system, arcticfox builds ok with my .mozconfig. However when I try to run it, the binary crashs with...

Curious what other OpenBSD users use as their main shell?

If you've missed it there have been a number of security issues patched; namely in openssh, opensmtpd and most recently for Zenbleed. Check out undeadly.org for details. Good time for to run syspatch if.you haven't for a while.

Interesting idea from @solene ā Came across this post on solene's capsule. Basically has an intent to create an OpenBSD package to deploy a QubesOS style app isolation setup using VMD. Sounds interesting and it would be nice if the VM template system is generic enough to be used for general VMD deployment.

I am Deckard Cain; Stay a while and listen. ā Been getting the x270 ready for a bank holiday staycation. Ordered and installed a 74Wh removable battery. I also found my old Diablo CD so I've installed devilutionx via pkg_add :) The install was not without a few snags though (and not the good Aussie kind). As you'd expect the pkg_add itself went fine... however, there's no man page with the package to tell you what data files are required froom the original CD nor could I find a readme. After...

Anyone running OpenBSD on a laptop have any tips or tricks they want to share? One tip I have is turning off hardware acceleration in Firefox. Before I did that the laptop would rapidly heat up, fans at full speed, and battery life signficantly impacted.

An opener... ā So, I guess the first thing to ask is who if any of you lovely people are using OpenBSD? What are you using it for? Personally I've been daily driving it on an x270 since OBSD 7.2 and am loving it. I have a more modern laptop with Linux on it but I honestly find myself more drawn to the x270. It's secure, lightweight and I'm learning new skills :)
