The file archive: MactoA2Archivers.image.sit.hqx and its and info file as
standard texis now available for anonymous public access and downloads from;
ftp://apple.cabi.net/pub/applegs/Mac.to.A2.STUFF/
or
http://apple.cabi.net/pub/applegs/Mac.to.A2.STUFF/
also available from the apple.cabi.net - applegs mirror ftp site:
ftp://ftp.tarnover.dyndns.org/Mac.to.A2.STUFF/
I've uploaded the archive and this posted information file as a standard text
file with it to our Apple2 ftp and http archive site, 'Ground'. I'm fairly sure
that Steve Nelson, the maintainer of the Ground site will soon make the archive
and text file for it available for public access and download.
I've also uploaded both the archive and INFO text file for it to:
ftp://trenco.myrias.com//incoming/
for the maintainer of this Apple 2 ftp and http site to do with it as he sees fit.
Read on folks and see my added comments noted with -> *** :) below.
Today (6/10/99) - SuperTimer made the following CSA2 post request again and I've
taken his request and acted on it, per his instructions convering the following
post - with this upload to our Apple II ftp sites.

Yes, on America Online's Apple II Forum. There is a disk containing
ShrinkIt!, ShrinkIt! GS, GSCII+, and binscii that's stored under the
"Mac to Apple II" button on the home page of the forum. It is a Mac
DiskCopy disk image.
The catch: this forum can only be accessed via AOL.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- ** :) Consider it done Supertimer and all others needing it. The instruction file
follows - inserted below concerning it all also:
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
To transfer a file from a Macintosh (tm) to your Apple IIgs computer, first,
download the file that you want on your Macintosh.
If you are running System 7.0 or later on your Macintosh, you can use the "PC
Exchange" extension on your Mac system software to read from or write directly
to 3.5 inch, 800k ProDOS formatted diskettes. (PC Exchange comes with Mac
System Software 7.5 and later, but if you have System Software 7.0, it will have
to be obtained separately. Call 1-800-CALL-APPL for more information on PC
Exchange).
Or, if you have System Software 6.0 or later on your IIGS, you can use the Mac
HFS File System Translator that comes with your IIGS system software to read
from and write directly to 3.5 inch 800k Macintosh formatted diskettes. (If you
don't have the Mac HFS File System Translator installed on your machine, you can
use the Installer program on the System Software disk to add it to your setup.)
Apple IIgs system 6.O.1 is available in the Apple Inc forum here online.
So, it is a relatively simple matter to download Apple II files on your
Macintosh and then copy them to a diskette that can be read on your IIGS.
But once you get the files to a ProDOS formatted diskette, you may encounter
other problems depending upon the intended file type of the file, since Apple II
file types are not preserved when they are transferred from platform to
platform. The Apple II files in our libraries come in different varieties:
1. Some of the files in our libraries are plain text files (which can be
tranferred and read from any kind of computer so long as you have a text file
reader.) You shouldn't have any trouble utilizing these files after transfer
since the default file type on the IIGS is generally a text file.
2. Some of the files in our libraries are packed with a compression utility
called "ShrinkIt" (this compression program is similar to Stuffit on the Mac).
Do you have ShrinkIt on your IIGS already? (Or is this something you need to
download?) It doesn't matter if the file type changes on files packed with
ShrinkIt, since the ShrinkIt program can extract a ShrinkIt packed archive even
if the file type is incorrect.
3. Some of the files in our libraries are uploaded as straight programs (SYS,
S16, BAS, or BIN file types) with no compression. If you try to download files
of this type on your Mac, you'll have to change the file type of the file on
your IIGS in order to get the program to work properly. Do you have a file type
changer program on your IIGS already?
For more information about what to do with your file after you have it ready for
transfer see the next document in this collection.
--------------------end of instruction file, post request content follows---------------------
The problem. PC users can't download it without messing up the
Mac info! Yes, I have tried to download it and email it to a Mac
user. The Mac user said he could not unpack it. I used the IIGS
program "Clone," to extract the DiskCopy image and it tested fine,
but it seems once downloaded to a PC, Macs won't touch it.
What is required is for a *MAC* user to download it through the
Mac version of AOL and then BinHex encode it before uploading
it to an Apple II FTP site. This will once and for all solve the
chicken and the egg problem.
If only a Mac using AOL user would be willing to do the grunt
work.
The AOL Apple II Forum can be reached with this keyword:
aol://4344:1264.a2main.10029531.514525857
Paste it into the keyword dialog box (click on the Keyword
button next to the URL bar in AOL 4 or under the GoTo menu
in AOL 3 and before) and then click to go.
A couple of months ago, Charles Turley tried to upload a similar
image, but it was not BinHex encoded so Mac users can't
download it properly. If a Mac AOL user would do the transfer,
please BinHex encode it first.
