I've noticed this theme of people really giving certain languages and technologies in general a TON of hate, writing posts in ways that paint others who enjoy or see value in those technologies as idiots. 9 times out of 10, those things really are useful for something, and chances are you're not familiar enough to recognize it. I've been guilty of the same, but for a couple years now I've been making a concious effort to curb that behavior. It baffles me the lack of self-awareness exhibited by some in the software space when it comes to the ability to know when you're being too superlative.

I think people in general struggle to differentiate technology from people. I catch myself doing it too. I profoundly dislike the javascript/node ecosystem. That doesn't really mean I should dislike those who find value in that ecosystem. Fundamentally it's the language I dislike, not those who use it. I guess we're just wired for tribalism. Whoever claims tolerance is easy doesn't know the extent of the word's meaning. · 2 years ago

imho it's quite possible that these articles are mixing stereotypes of programmers or business verticals into this. for instance java is largely used for software in large companies and for that reason is neither bleeding edge, nor core-anything. it attracts a certain crowd that demand/program it and the development process is largely driven by business people who need a solution for something, but are not technically versed. all of this is probably mixed into the articles · 2 years ago

@mcoffin I agree with what you say. (Except for Java, of course.) ;) · 2 years ago

Mostly its tribalism in my opinion particularly when it comes to $favourite_os and $favourite_language. We all need to identify the other to feel secure in who we are, and technologists take their technology very seriously. I think the best antidote to feelings of antagonism is simply to become more informed about the technology in question, and then vote with your feet · 2 years ago

That's seems to be how it's always been. Sometimes the hate's more about the application of a technology than about the technology itself. Except anything by Microsoft. That's both the technology and any application thereof. Google is doing a great job of competing on that front though. Watch this space! · 2 years ago
