Lot of content from the WWW that I would like to mirror here (i.e. free language learning courses/guides) but I'm hesitant to. Almost feels like I'm "stealing" even though I take no credit - I just think it would be nice to have these resources available over Gemini since the creators are likely not interested in that. Hmm.

@jsreed5 That's a good way to go about it. I'll have to keep it in mind for other ideas for stuff to share - right now I think these guides I'm considering fit the criteria perfectly. · 1 year ago

I use a few criteria when deciding to mirror something on Gemini. Have I personally read all of it? Do I use what I learned from it regularly? Is it quite meaningful or thought-provoking to me? If someone asked me to teach them about the topic, would I heavily reference this already? And of couse, always cite and provide links to the original documents. · 1 year ago

@jo if it's static content you can save a local copy with wget or something similar, then the trick is going thru and modifying all the links to work correctly with your capsule... that's what I did with my mirror of the konpeito mixtapes · 1 year ago

@johano For right now, the "lipu sona pona" guide to toki pona and a transcript of Cure Dolly's guides to Japanese. I'd like to add something for Gaeilge later, but I have yet to find a good resource for that other than moving to Ireland. · 1 year ago

@slanderbot Considering alot of people using Gemini are already pretty tech-y to begin with, it'd probably fit right in. You never know who might be interested though, I'm surprised people actually read my gemlog.

@jo I'm sure there's a way to automate it for some sites like how Geddit and them work, but I just like to go through and copy-paste text, then format it into gemtext. Sometimes I'll just retype it entirely. I love tedium. · 1 year ago

i would mirror some sites but idk how it works 💀 · 1 year ago

from a moral perspective, I don't see anything wrong with doing it. I'm pretty tempted myself, although I'm not sure exactly what sort of people would be looking for a random computer tutorials based on my own personal interest. The web archive does it, and that isn't even a particularly personal process. · 1 year ago
