The life advice in this capsule is based on the philosophy of Epicurus, who lived from 341BC to 270BC.

At that time, Greek philosophy was similar to self-help advice to teach how one should live one's life.

Epicurus was a Greek philosopher who focused on a self-created moral code to decide on one's behavior to maximize one's happiness and tranquility.

A few years ago, I quit my job and moved into a camper van. I drove out to the desert and boondocked in remote areas. I began to study various philosophies in order to learn how to live my life outside of work and away from society.

I struck gold when I came across Epicurus.

Epicurus promoted a philosophy that freed one from the fear of death, fear of the gods, fear of pain and fear of torment in the afterlife. Epicurus teaches that happiness is easy to achieve, and that most of our fears are based on superstitions which are false beliefs. Once freed from these fears, one can carefully plan one's life and daily behavior to maximize happiness.

Most of the writings of Epicurus have been destroyed over the centuries. We have only a limited number of documents written by Epicurus or written by others describing the philosophy of Epicurus. The writings were destroyed because the philosophy weakened the hold of religion over the individual. Today, the student of Epicurus must read the existing texts, try to understand the concept behind the philosophy, and then interpolate the philosophy into something meaningful for people of today.

With this text, I present my interpretation of Epicurean philosophy in a way that can be applied to one's daily life. I now live in a house with a garden and do my best to maximize happiness and tranquility.
