Microchipping and registration of your pets is so important. Most of
the dogs that come into our care from the Kildare Dog Pound, and as
welfare cases, are not microchipped and many of the ones that are
microchipped are not officially registered with the two main registries
in Ireland, Fido and Animark.
Some breeders do their own microchipping, but do not register the dog.
So although you may be told your dog is microchipped and it is, if it
is not also registered with a central agency with your contact details,
then the microchip is useless.
It is well worth checking with your vet when you are next visiting to
make sure all your contact details are registered.
Or you can contact Fido or Animark yourself to find out if your pet is
registered. Although it is not a legal requirement for cats to be
microchipped and registered, it is well worth doing so even if your cat
does not normally stray.
Special Homes Needed
These three dogs are aged between one and five years old and they
arrived into the care of the KWWSPCA some time ago in a very nervous
state.
They were completely unsocialised at that time, and it has taken
several weeks for them to come out of their shells and interact with
our volunteers.
They still remain cautious around humans and are slow to approach,
although they are now very accepting of affection and are happy to be
taken for walks on their leads.
They are learning how to live in this big world. They are extremely
happy dogs when left on their own and are very playful, tumbling around
their kennel, and they really enjoy chasing each other around our
enclosed garden area.
We are looking for quite specific and experienced homes for these
retrievers. Homes with young children may prove just too boisterous for
them. A home that already has a confident dog may be very beneficial to
any of these girls.
Their new owners will need to fully accept and understand that there is
a serious learning curve ahead to bring the girls to their full
potential. We find Aggie (the eldest) to be a bit more independent, but
it would be lovely to see the other pair, Nina and Nessa, remain
together if at all possible.
Please go to the KWWSPCA website, www.kwwspca.ie, for more information
about these dogs.
