Its Patsy

The word ā€œitsā€ is a difficult and weird word since itā€™s the possessive case and possessive noun clauses usually do end with ā€˜s, like ā€œMaryā€™s chainā€. We donā€™t have anything similar in Swedish, either (we would write ā€œMarias kƤttingā€), so I have no intuition for this and itā€™s one of my most common English mistakes. I try to remember it by thinking that the other possessive pronouns donā€™t have apostrophes either, itā€™s ā€œhisā€, not ā€œheā€™sā€.

I still make these mistakes and have been thinking of an Emacs mode to just highlight all ā€œitā€™sā€ no matter what. (The other way around, highlighting ā€œitsā€, is way less necessary, that error is not as common.)
