I grew up on that big peninsula in Wisconsin that sticks out into Lake Michigan. Nearly every weekend during the summer I could be found on the family boat, jet skiing with friends or just hanging out on the beach. The radio was always playing oldies and boat rock. About half of the CD's we owned were Jimmy Buffett. We all knew the words to every song, the classics, the deep cuts. His music was the soundtrack to my childhood.
I saw Jimmy Buffett in concert half a dozen times over the years. The first time I was probably 12 or 13. Pre-show tailgating at Alpine Valley was a mix of celebrating music and a lot of drinking, drugs and sex. Went every other year well into college. Grass seats, singing the same songs, it was always an amazing time.
When I heard the other night about Jimmy's passing I turned on Radio Margaritaville and all the memories came flooding back. People were calling in giving the stories of how Jimmy's music affected their lives. The world has changed a lot in the past 20 years. I'm now middle aged, with my own family. I haven't been to one of his concerts in years and I don't live the same lifestyle I did as a kid. But listening to his music again brought back so many fond memories. He will truly be missed.
There was this one little harbour just south of the marina where we kept our boat. After a long weekend of hanging out friends, partying and enjoying life, we'd stop and park to take one last swim and unwind before our weekend was over. Think my mom played "One Particular Harbour" every time we pulled in and dropped anchor.
There's that one particular harbour Sheltered from the wind Where the children play on the shore each day And all are safe within A most mysterious calling harbour So far but yet so near I can see the day where my hair's full gray And I finally disappear
