Pit Stop

Got the call from school at 12:10, my son had his insulin pod knocked off and would obviously need it replaced before he could eat lunch.

Work computer tells me I have a 12:30 meeting

Race through the house grabbing my car keys, a new pod, alcohol wipe, and insulin.

6 minute drive to school, calling them to make sure he's by the front door.

Arrive at school, get handed dead pod, rapidly move to a semi-secluded corner of the office.

Draw 80 units of insulin and inject it into the pod. Begin to synchronize the new pod with his phone.

While it is syncing, pull my son's pants down just enough to get at the spot on his hip he wants. Hold pants with 1 hand, place packet for alcohol wipe between teeth and tear open packet with other hand.

Couple quick wipes with the alcohol, and grab the clamshell case the new insulin pod came in and fan the wiped area so it dries.

Phone and Pod have finished synchronizing, and pod has primed the insulin. Pull the adhesive backing off the pod and put it on his hip, while he triggers the canula insertion on his phone.

My son counts down the clicks until the needle from the pod forces the canula in him while I tear down the syringe, clean up adhesive backing, gather the insulin and everything else I brought.

Large click from the pod, I see my son's face wince in pain as the canula is inserted. I peek in the window on the pod to see that it has been inserted properly while vigorously rubbing the adhesive to make sure it'll stay on for the next 3 days.

Pull up his pants, give him a quick hug, and race back out the door. At school less than 5 minutes all total.

6 minute drive home feeling like I was just part of a Formula 1 pit crew that pulled off a 2 second pit stop.

Run to my work computer at 12:29. Just in time to see that my 12:30 meeting has been canceled.

Just another day of Type 1 Diabetes.
