Hello Pekko!

Posted Tue 08 Aug, 2023.

I'm very unhappy with Lightbend abandoning open source for the new releases of Akka. I mentioned some options moving forwared here:

Akka and the future of SpaceBeans

But at the end, thanks to some pointers via Mastodon, I have found about Apache Pekko:

Apache Pekko is an open-source framework for building applications that are concurrent, distributed, resilient and elastic. Pekko uses the Actor Model to provide more intuitive high-level abstractions for concurrency. Using these abstractions, Pekko also provides libraries for persistence, streams, HTTP, and more.
Pekko is a fork of Akka 2.6.x, prior to the Akka project's adoption of the Business Source License.

Which is sad in a way, but perfect in many others, because that means SpaceBeans will live on without a big investment on my part.

I would have stayed on the open source version of Akka, or ignore the license and upgrade to the latest version -which I considered for a while-, but I can't honestly keep using a project when it is not really open source any more. Not only because I wouldn't be complying with the license, but also because I would be "promoting" in a way a project that doesn't deserve such promotion any more.

I still don't know if SpaceBeans is important for anyone but me, but I'm happy to say the project will live on thanks to Apache Pekko.

Please upgrade to latest version 1.3.6 to enjoy of the the first release of SpaceBeans using Pekko:
