Living in the future

Every once in awhile I think about a recent technology or advancement and have the passing thought of "oh geez, we're living in the future." This past year, while largely in isolation due to the pandemic, nothing made this feel more so than the proliferation of video conferencing and meeting.

The funny thing is that such video chatting wasn't even that new to me. it was something that my friend, N, and I had been doing for several years already. I think the big change came about in the near universal adoption of the technology throughout 2020. When you further combine video chatting with the likes of smart phones, and general mobility technology, it can really start to feel Star Trek-ish or like something from the Jetsons (albeit with less flying cars . . . * sigh *).

The thing is, every moment is essentially "the future" to the previous moment and so i suspect that feeling of "we're living in the future" is more a product of a longer life lived. We inevitably contain memories of a past, where current technology and occurrences have yet to happen. Future living then, is a response to the changing in the world. The progress of technology and society.

That is all.
