As an open, federated system the fediverse cannot refuse Threads and maintain openness, or can it? I have no doubt that Facebook's intentions for the fediverse will not benefit the fediverse. They will only benefit Facebook's shareholders in the end and Facebook c-suites will seek that benefit with no regard for the negative impact they will have on the fediverse. But we can't block them and claim the fediverse is open... expect that we can. Of course we can!
This is the frustrating, and wonderful part of open systems: some parts can block other parts and the system will still function in its own way. Many (if not all) fedi instance admins block at least some other instances. This is how we deal with bad actors in the space and it is a regular, every-day occurrence. The only reason we are debating whether to block Threads is because it is a preemptive block. If a fedi instance already in the space was housing the amount of hate speech, abuse and spam we expect to emanate from Threads they would already be blocked by most of the fediverse. I expect many instances will end up blocking Threads later if they don't do it now.
Block now or block later, we all have to block Threads for the safety of the people using the fediverse and we can do this because it is an open system.
