4/20/2022 - strange attraction + p.s.a.
Mood: Jovial. Antsy.
I've been going through my watchlist (yes, I actually have a real non-imaginary watchlist) to find something new to watch and I'm considering getting into a Paul Dano flick. He's in a lot more movies than I expected. I really enjoyed him in There WIll Be Blood and Okja... and I recently saw The Batman, which I actually didn't know he was in. I feel like he's got a pretty unique sort of demeanor. It's a bit hard to explain but his yell or freakouts in particular are so interesting. He's very good at off-beat characters.
This is tangentially related, and please let it be known that I'm not referring to Paul Dano when I say this, but so many people have such strange taste in men. Maybe I'm a bit biased because I looove women, but I do not understand some of the fascinations people have. Lots of folks seem to gravitate towards mediocre white guy actors when there's always (in my opinion) a much more attractive actor of color in the movie. I don't wanna give examples because it'll make me feel guilty (lol) but I'm surprised someone like Lakeith Stanfield isn't being obsessed over. I think he's crazy fine. I know it does sometimes get weird when it has to do with Asian folks (especially if they are not brownskinned) if you've ever heard how white fans of Asian media talk sometimes. It always leans a bit too close to fetishization and/or infantilization, doesn't it?
I think you find more people excited about people of color in things like music. That's probably more due to some of the most popular genres being "ethnic" in some way, from rap to R&B to K-pop to who knows what else. I don't always enjoy that because that's when you get white folks obsessed with Megan Thee Stallion but don't care about or support black women outside of their favorite musicians. There always seems to be a bit more hesitation to support black men for some reason too. Unless they're gay. I've got some complicated feelings about Lil Nas X, mainly about his misogynoir and islamophobia that he never owned up to, but I'll complain about that in another glog post.
Man that actually just reminded me. Remember when everyone was obsessed with Laverne Cox? I miss that era. I used to see photos of her plastered all over social media. I haven't heard much new about her since Orange is the New Black, so I might need to look into what else she's been in since then. If y'all have any recommendations, you should let me know... no, I am not watching that Awkwafina show.
I also think in case anyone reads this, I may as well do a Public Service Anouncement since I've seen more media about it lately. There is a certain Native American spirit whose name people throw around alot that you really shouldn't be saying. Even if you are not superstitious, it's really deeply offensive to make silly horror media about it or even say the name aloud, as it is considered taboo. You could say it's about as offensive as making a depiction of the Islamic prophet Muhammad. If you're curious what the word/spirit is, look up the movie Antlers (2021) and you'll likely come across the name.
People could really stand to be more respectful of indigenous cultures and belief systems.
Oh, if you couldn't tell, I'm in a better mood from yesterday. I somehow got food poisoning and slept a looong time and now I'm awake again. Not the best time to have woken up, but I am indeed awake. Something about throwing up is a very humbling process. I'll be sure to take it easy today, drink lots of fluids, and eat soft foods. Do not worry your little heads about ol' Anthrax.
I actually might sleep some more just because my stomach is still hurting a bit. Or maybe I should just drink something. I'll figure it out later.
