i brought my idea to charge a 4x4 electric vehicle via solar to my friend who is smarter than me. he did some quick math and it turns out what i was planning is quite a stretch. i would need a lot of buffer batteries in my (to be built) house to store a full car charge during the day (solar) and then transfer it overnight to the car (to be bought one day)

good thing i don’t have money to do anything right now and start again from scratch. the solar only car charging idea gets too expensive given current prices and battery technologies.

@ruby_witch @lykso we don’t have a power line at our property. just fresh water and 5g internet. the basics :) however, that might change when they see i can sell them lots of solar energy, they might connect us. would love to see a meter rewinding, that would be very satisfying. · 2 years ago

Even if you're not able to charge the car 100% through solar, I think that it would at least make a dent in it. Also, even if you don't have enough battery capacity in your house you will be making a big reduction in your electric bill if your local power company allows your meter to rollback, you may want to look into that. Charging the vehicle *without* the solar is going to be a lot more painful than with it. · 2 years ago

Depending on the current energy mix in your area, treating the grid as a battery may be a reasonable method for now. I.e., so long as you're offsetting dirty energy during the day and using the same or less dirty energy at night, you're at worst neutral. · 2 years ago
