This is what the English tongue hath wrought:

Agree to disagree - Wikipedia

There is no end to the semantic white noise. I can never understand this language.

Let’s pick flowers to not pick flowers. Let’s fight for peace. Freedom is slavery. Ignorance is strength.

I’m giving up on English. Tune the radio to between stations. That’s what English sounds to me now.

Esther kicks as per ushe:

Some more thoughts on FOSS Sustainability

In FOSS, let’s continue to strive for dialectics between:

1. Being able to just upload any random tarball without needing to be responsible for life, including, but not limited to, the implied warranties of merchantability and fitness for a particular purpose.

2. Not being mean to each other.

People sending bug reports, patches, even feature wishes are trying to help the project.

We don’t owe them a reply since they’re not paying customers. If our spoons run out we can just file it to /dev/null or archive it in case someone who forks it wants it.

But we do owe them to not be mean or vicious or patronizing or eye-rolling since they’re contributors. Even complainers are contributors.

2024-05-26 10:43

Open core can be worse than proprietary software if it’s the kind of open core that’s basically unusable outside of their proprietary setup since, to a greater extent than other kinds of proprietary software, it’s a trap that extracts free labor from contributors.

That’s not in defense of proprietary software. Real FOSS is the way to go; where we all own it together and care for it together like a community garden (except better. I wish I could fork some of the IRL community gardens around here
).

I’ve got the kind of personality that loves to make it right if I see something small & fixable, whether that’s on a wiki or in an app. I’m susceptible to making the kind of “contributions” that open core projects tend to solicit. But from a political, socioeconomics bigger picture I’m gonna try to stay wise about not doing that.

Gitea hasn’t done anything bad yet, right?

Forgejo makes a full break from Gitea

People seem to have been switching from Gitea to Forgejo more out of precaution.

I’m not invested in either. As a frequent drive-by contributor, I find both of them equal pains in the neck—I only mean practically speaking: having ten thousand accounts, one for each instance.

I like git send-email and git request-pull as leveraging git’s already fundamentally federated nature. On the protocol level, I mean. UX and tooling around that still has a way to go + there’s no issue tracking or review.

Speaking of Kovid Goyal, one of the pages I read was this one, which mentions him:

tmux is worse is better | Andrew Quinn’s TILs

I’ve never used tmux or screen, relying instead on dtach (which is great!) and the terminal emulator’s scrollback feature. And the Emacs daemon. I’ve usually had two connections open, one with Emacs running and one for other things. Now that I’m on mosh, which doesn’t have scrollback, I’ve found myself using the Emacs shell more than previously, and also piping stuff through &less, a zsh-specific shortcut for getting both stdout and stdin into less. Not having scrollback sucks.

I guess that the less and the Emacs solutions both have the same “it duplicates character printing” isse that Goyal is worried about with tmux. So that’s not why I don’t use tmux or screen, it’s more that I’ve
Uh. Not sure. But for CLI stuff Emacs works fine and I don’t use much TUI stuff, and when I do I can use dtach (rtorrent is pretty much the only one although I might have switch from it to one that supports webtorrents so that I can seed for Peer Tube).

It also shows newest first which is super weird! That’s not how books work! (Although that is how newspapers work which I guess is what this emulates.) Maybe there’s a setting in the Calibre recipe to fix that.

I spoke a li’l bit too soon about my network being restored; seems I still have some sorta NAT or name issue. One of my servers is still not accessible.

But I’m grateful to the magic of friendship that it’s still accessible enough so Calibre could create this week’s issue of RSS feeds for me, and I just caught up on a whole week of Antenna at once. (The idea is to read these at night but maybe it’s fine that I read ‘em on a Sunday morning.)

Calibre by default makes each feed its own chapter. Not sure how I feel about that given that my goal here is to put a whole week’s worth of feeds in one bigger epub as opposed to one smaller daily news paper every day. I’ve put Antenna (with all my blocks, I use the filter feature so much) as the first such chapter since that feels like the most time-sensitive one.

My normal RSS reader has some 80 or so feeds, I put half a dozen of them in here; the ones that are about long-form text. The other feeds are microblogs or videos. I kept them in my other RSS reader too but moved them to a new tab that I named “Too Cozy” since they’re too cozy to read on iPad.

Turncoats, all five of the games were really different from each other and I see that as a good sign. I like how it looks and feels, but people should know that what looks embroidered in photos and videos is actually just printed.

My home network completely collapsed worse than Watari-kun’s ****** the other day so I’ve been a li’l stressed out. Today before D&D with the dorks, one of which is Halo ♄ and the other I’ll use the code name “M” today, M helped me sort everything out and replace my router with a spare that I temporarily borrowed from Simon when I was moving and am definitively not allowed to keep (but now I’ve got to because it’s gonna be my new permanent one).

I run my Debian computer headless (I use it for most things, but I connect to it from a tablet [for example I’m writing this post right now in an Emacs running on that machine]) and to troubleshoot I schlepped out my huge monitor from storage (but I forgot to search out the right adapter so we still couldn’t use it but managed to boot successfully headlessly anyway).

It was a herculean effort that took a lot of time and required all of “M”‘s chops, a lot of stuff that I didn’t really know how to do. Baby I can cons your car, but I’m not great at network tech stuff! We figured out why the headless machine had been unreachable when I had my temporary just-for-now LAN (my apologies for the unscheduled downtime of my Nyhetsgrej demo instance): because it uses a fixed IP (one of my lucky numbers) instead of trusting the DHCP to assign one; and the temp LAN was on 10.0.1.foo instead of the net my old (and now my new) network uses.

We also played a li’l bit of Turncoats before and after our D&D session. I first heard about it on SUSD and for some reason I had gotten it in my head that I wanted to try it on three before I tried any other player count (and it plays great at three and I suspect all the counts might be good; it’s supposed to play 2–5). The first game was a complete disaster; at the time it felt like a total luckfest; one player (“M”) was completely locked out of the game based on the beads we drew and the way the land was seeded. I won the first two games and then “M” won the last three. I now think there were a lot of things M could’ve done in that first game actually. I dunno.

Me and Halo have opposite approaches when we’re not sure whether a game “has legs” or if it’s just gonna be a li’l fun for a li’l while.

If I understand him correctly, and I’m not sure I do, he wants to savor them and not waste them and bring them out every now and then for some fun. Games he knows have infinite legs, like go and Agricola (was the example he mentioned; I’ve never played it even though it’s Scapa’s favorite game), them he loves to “grind” (i.e. play thousands of times in a row). Games that might not have that amount of legs he don’t wanna “use up”.

I’m the other way around for two reasons.

1. I’ve really been surprised at games I thought didn’t have the legs but then the rabbit hole went all the way down, like Radlands. So prematurely staying away from a game that might have unknown pleasures feels like a waste, having it gathering dust on the shelf when we could be exploring a true gem.

2. And if the game really don’t have legs, I’d rather know that for sure sooner rather than later so we can sell it or it can go into deep storage for when we have a fresh perspective or nostalgia. Time, money & space are all limited, and my way of savoring the games is by playing them a lot a lot a lot.

The D&D itself was a mixed bag. They’re a li’l frustrated with where they are in the dungeon given the restrictions of their current set of equipment (they had a conjurer who conjured up a way to get through a particular kind of door and then that conjurer died; he was also the beloved heir of Kherbog Khan so when he died a huge chunk of story potential died). But on the plus side one thing happened that’s so emblematic of where our super troupy dollhouse drama style is at right now: they ran into the Varuda for the first time (having found books and paintings and and sculptures and corpses of them earlier) and
they immediately rolled up a pair of Varuda characters of their own! (One of them, Ondela al-Verrik, unfortunately had a life that was nasty, brutish and short. She was a bird bard without any instruments so they had to find components for all her spells, which they managed to do and then she died.)

This is why when peeps on S-G called us “gamists”, I was like “I’m not so sure about that” and finally I had too cook up the whole RISS official, canonical theory to explain where I was at with things (and soon enough, but not as soon as I woulda wished, I decided to focus my pontification on the blorb corner just like I wish how some other theorists would’ve focused on their main wheelhous (Narr) instead of completly jumbling up the Sim waters with their half-understood takes (like “Toon is sim!”)).

After Turncoats we played a session of Ticket to Ride (Nordic, the snow trains one, not the cursed “Nordic Lights” edition). That was the biggest delta spread I’ve ever seen in a game of TTR. Halo had 135 points, I had 78, and M had five! Halo please post the photo in this thread!♄♄

Then we played two games of “Mists over Carcassonne”, level three, losing both. I’m of two minds of that game. It’s not very elegant; there’s dozens of hard-to-remember rules all cobbled together like a Frankenstein. And I’m honestly really scared of ghosts so for me it’s an emotional journey playing it. But it’s so tense and good. Just the right amount of puzzliness and luck. But then the flipside is that in our old co-op fave, The Cure, you can adjust difficulty and complexity separately which I love in a co-op. In “Mists”, you can’t: more difficult means more complex. That’s why I’m not so sure it has “legs” (is that expression ableist? “Staying power” might be better?).

Overall, a day that started out with a complete clustermess ended up super awesome♄♄ I get by with a li’l help of my friends!

I’ve been on my feet & out of bed and I’ve consciously been prioritizing meeting people during those days since it’s so rare for me to be healthy enough to leave the apt or hae people over. And knock on a whole pile of wood but maybe it’s a positive feedback loop that that makes me healthier?

I feel guilty towards Simon since we wanted to do other stuff today (comics!) and next time I schedule D&D, I’ll talk to him first! đŸ’đŸ»â€â™€ïž

And now the post I’m reading is a post on Gemini about how good it would be to make a Gemini reader. I guess I’m living in the future since I’m literally reading that gemlog entry on an old used Kindle Paperwhite 3, a handmedown from Simon. Fun fun fun.♄

It’s gone through some hoops and isn’t exactly utilizing the simplicity of gemtext since it’s being converted from gemtext to Atom to epub to mobi. Hoops within hoops within hoops, but it looks great and is super readable.

Not sure why I’ve got an eink-reader in one hand and a keyboard-connected-to-the-iPad in the other. I guess to test that the recipe worked alright? I cooked it up on Friday and ran it manually then; it’s supposed to run on Sundays so that’s what I’m testing now. This edition looks better since last edition accidentally got generated as mobi and then took a roundtrip to epub before it turned back to mobi, whereas this one got generated as epub directly before getting turned to mobi.

2024-05-19 07:57

Also the idea to read this at night to calm me down proved to be a dud as early as first night because I found a post I “had to” respond to (since it was about me which surprised me because it came from a feed I felt pretty remote to) and I immediately jumped out of bed and grabbed my tablet and started writing.

Maybe next time that happens I can just take a note to get to it in the morning?

I made a Calibre recipe for a weekly RSS-scraped journal called “Cozy veckotidning” but then on the e-reader all the issues (well, “both” so far since I just started it) have the same name and I can’t really tell them apart outside of opening them. I’ve got the books sorted by date for the most part so it’s not too bad, but that’s still a li’l weird.

Also since it only scrapes weekly, I might miss posts from the feeds that rotate out quicker than once a week so my plan longterm is to cook up a li’l RSS/Atom caching proxy for them that scrapes every second day or something. A lot of SMOP yaks to shave when the entire purpose was to get more offline. đŸ€ŠđŸ»â€â™€ïž

S vill stÀnga av alla SD:s tjÀnstemÀn i regeringskansliet i vÀntan pÄ en sÀkerhetsprövning.

Yes!!

The world’s saddest day was salvaged by unexpected boardgame day with Halo! First and foremost we took a trip to the lands so Rad (i.e. playing the “Radlands” game) where I lost the first game but then won twice. I mimicked his Vera Vosh♄

He schooled me twice in Kanare’s “Orochi” game. We played the baby version with a size four hexhex, on the li’l dinky^W portable napkin hexboard that Kanare made. I don’t have a comfy wooden hexboard for big go stones outside of the centerless Meridian boards but maybe Orochi would play well on that board too? I enjoyed the game-of-like like “overconnection” restriction on playing but was struggling with the endgame goal; I was juggling parity (nim-style) to make sure that the last stone was gonna get played on my side but then that meant that he managed to cut me off, divide, & isolate “my” side so that he got the last stone after all. Looking forward to exploring it more. It doesn’t need to have legs since Meridians is already so great and there’s also already many other games in that li’l “generic hexboard” box, but this first taste was fun. I wanna go back to Orochi before trying the other games.

We won one game each of my favorite game, my number one game of all time, Focus. Here, too, we’re switched to playing the baby variant (first to six points) and I feel like we have a long way ahead of us before we are even ready to play the full game. When I first got the game, I was a li’l cocky & stubborn so I was playing the full game with Barney and with Simon but with mediocre success. So now when I’m introducing it to other friends, I introduce the get-six-points variant (or as Schafer calls it: the “finite game”), if for nothing else because I need it, I’m not good at spotting when the so-called full game is actually over because I don’t have a deep enough understanding of the game yet. And that’s part of why I love it, there’s much to explore. Worst case it’s just some sorta three dimensional nim/parity affair and it’ll tumble down my own personal favorite rankings but I’m OK with that. It’s my favorite game of all time as far as I currently know but I don’t know everything yet.

Then I broke my losing streak in Pollen and won big. Luck of the draw, insanely great streak of pulls from the bug bag (I was going for bees and butterflies, and for the first ten tokens there were almost no junebugs pulled so I could win by running out the bee supply) but mostly coasting off some early misplays. As far as I understand it, there’s not really a runaway winner problem with the game, or not more than other games, but one can really paint oneself into a corner on the board and with cards in hands. I guess parity was the theme of the day since getting last flower card in is huge.

Then we took a break from boardgames and had a li’l impromptu workshop on how much Fedi sucks and is incomprehensible. Like, posts from people you follow or that get boosted into your timeline, that’s easy enough, but if you find a nice post on another instance and you wanna like it or reblog it or reply to it? It’s mindblowingly difficult. I’ve tried to make a tutorial, and for myself I have a bookmarklet that makes it a li’l quicker, but it’s just a total mind melt to try to explain.

Fedi is doomed to be only for super nerds if it stays this difficult. Easiest way for the community to fix this might be if there is support on the browser level. Browser plugins or even built-in browser features that help follow AP links and redirects and yank stuff into your instance. Where’s that reckless scope of the web when you really need it? (Or a very ambitious Fedi client app might be able to do that.)

Finally we had a li’l Ray Bradbury story hour where I forced him to listen to my reading of the T-Rex scene in The Golden Apples of the Sun but he didn’t get scared, he was just like “OK I’m gonna remember that next time we get ahold of a Polymorph spell”. The monsters are coming from inside the house đŸ€ŠđŸ»â€â™€ïž

Once more stumbling into so much discourse about me that I had never heard of:

Seed of Worlds: Own Personal Blorb/AntiBlorb

First of all, they’re codifying one variant of antiblorb:

Liche’s Libram: antiblorb (blorb + anticanon)

But I had already used the phrase “antiblorb” for something else:

Antiblorb

Specifically, if you’re not doing blorb, if you buy into some sorta “no myth” closet language theorem, you don’t need a DM. They have a sorta inside-out truth tier list but their tier one is the same as blorb’s. All I can say is “always be testing”, i.e. while this to me sounds like it wouldn’t have what I love about blorb it might still be a worthwhile use of their time. To me it sounds more like lumpley@dice.camp’s “garst” than antiblorb (a.k.a. “no myth”).

And then there is:

GM-less roleplaying games

Mirror Story

Blorbs and Blorbos - An Informal Etymology

I’ve got to say I got a li’l pit in my stomach seeing that since I’m not a fan of the “fail forward” concept but they actually seemed to have a pretty good understanding of blorb. Then their “blorbo” concept is what I’ve called gnusto before. I hadn’t head of the Tumblr concept but blorb in Enchanter is a spell of protection so that makes sense to me.

Seed of Worlds writes:

You generate some reasonable principles for the world - a good encounter table permits the players to wander wherever in a hex crawl for as long as they like

I do use a lot of tier two truths (and even more “wallpaper principle” i.e. I can just
make up stuff, as long as it’s stuff that just cool detail and decoration that doesn’t harm or hurt them) so my prep is pretty sparse but there’s got to be some tier 1 truths in there or, again, we wouldn’t need a DM.

Having played DM-less all-tier-two just off of the AD&D dungeon generator poster that Blog of Holding did a few years back, I know that that can be plenty fun and works just fine. But that’s not what blorb is.

Seed of Worlds:

After further digging I figure that the reasons they disagree is the portrayal of the principles of blorb as iron laws as opposed to a neat heuristic to make a GM’s life easier

Yes, blorb is absolutely meant to be iron laws—when it comes to defining whether play is blorby. Unblorby things can also be fun (or awful). Our campaign has gone on for ten years and sometimes to my chagrin unblorby things happen, which I immediately call out & confess & lampshade. Not often, not intentionally, but the blorb discourse is good since it has given us a language to talk about the integrity of the game state and game world.

The least wild improv I do the better

Here, I agree. Not for the same reasons—I enjoy improv, I’m good(
?) at it, I’m comfortable doing it, but the way I was improving came at the expense of player agency. Blorb, I invented as a way to keep myself from improvising so much, which is otherwise my first instinct as a DM.

Fail Forward is bad for gaming

Allan Savory’s “grazing is good for the soil” myths are still reverberating. I just saw the usually wonderful Nick Offerman unfortunately parroting them on The Daily Show. I’m glad there’s a holistic back-to-nature view of stewardship, but

Several peer-reviewed studies have found that excluding livestock completely from semi-arid grasslands can lead to significant recovery of vegetation and soil carbon sequestration.

Tisdag: inget.

Nej men vad fint (obs: ironi).

2024-05-16 13:20

2. Not sure how Ud6’s EV is five turns; seems like it’d be three turns? Same for Ud8 which seems to me (a math noob) to be EV four turns, not nine. Since both 1 and 2 are triggers.

TL;DR: this package is great, use it:

GitHub - legoscia/messages-are-flowing: Make it easier to send “flowed” email messages from Emacs

Although it doesn’t format the last paragraph in each email properly (maybe it’s because I’ve neglected to put a hard newline after). I’ll see if I can fix it, or if someone else can, that’d be great.

Longer tedious causerie version:

I’ve been using use-hard-newlines for a while which is the mainstream Emacs way of supporting RFC 2646 but I’ve also been double-checking its results, looking at what it sends, and it’s been an ess show i.e. not good.

I heard of something called messages-are-flowing right after I started using use-hard-newlines but I wrongheadedly thought “enh, I’m all set, I don’t need to use a fan made package for this”.

And as the months rolled in, kept getting more & more frustrated with the limits and problems with the upstream use-hard-newlines solution.

And I had forgotten that I had heard of messages-are-flowing and I was even considering rolling my own solution (which woulda used Markdown semantics i.e. RET RET paragraph separating blank lines, and two spaces forces a hard newline, all else is soft; same semantics that I use for gmihw).

But then I though that before I do that, I’ll see if there’s a way to just show which newlines are hard or soft; whitespace-mode doesn’t. So I searched it up and turns out that that’s pretty much all messages-are-flowing does: it wraps & relies on the underlying use-hard-newlines solution but it shows the hard newlines.

(It’s maybe even a li’l overzealous since it also shows hard newlines in a RET RET para separator situation which is a li’l distracting, I’ll see if I can tweak that.)

Great! Easily installable with straight.el, and turning it on pretty much immediately showed why my emails have gotten so borked and after fixing them & sending them, they look great. Except for the last paragraph issue which still is an unsolved mystery but even before looking at the code, I’m pretty sure it’s just that there’s not a hard newline at EOF.

A poster in that thread wrote:

I’ve empathy for all parties in this situation, I think the proper solution would probably be to package both a “-full” and “-minimal” version of the software and utilize Debian package meta-data fields to define a Conflicts relationship between the packages and tag them also both with a Provides for keepassxc

I agree, that woulda been better.

and also add a tag Replaces: keepassxc to the -full build so that during a package upgrade an existing user would be provided the version that continues to provide the features of the package which is being upgraded/replaced while new users can choose for themselves which of the versions they’d like to install as well as providing a path for other unrelated packages to depend directly on either the -full or -minimal packages as desired.

I disagree. The Replaces should go to the minimal version. Secure by default. But this otherwise is a good solution that makes the differences between the two approaches even smaller and the fight even more resolvable.

A lot of the posters in that thread: “OMG the package that I want installed is now named keepassxc-full, how can I get the features I need?” Well, just apt install keepassxc-full.

2024-05-13 08:28

I’m in full agreement with Debian’s decision to make the minimal version the default and the full version move to keepassxc-full:

Debian Sid No-Feature KeePassXC Package · Issue #10725 · keepassxreboot/keepassxc · GitHub

And this entire fight is over mostly semantics:

Both “camps” want two packages. One wants the small one to be called keepassxc and the big one called keepassxc-full, the other wants the small one named keepassxc-minimal and the big one keepassxc.

That’s such a super minor thing to fight about. Roses in a broken vase are still roses.

The only reason the names matter is that people in the past who have installed the package named keepassxc, which version should they default to now that the package is split? Of course the minimal one!

I don’t use either version so I’m just in the peanut gallery on this one.

One reasons tensions grow is the implication that the network access is somehow sus. I do understand how that must feel bad as a dev. Looking past that, looking from the outside, I think the Debian maintainers did the right thing.

I played more Netrunner with Barney yesterday although I don’t fully remember everything that happen because I was a li’l sleep deprived before and didn’t sleep much after either but most of the games were fun and anyone-could-win.

I lost most of the games to the point that he started doubting that I was playing seriously so I had to explain that while my plan perhaps wasn’t very good, I did have one and that to the “why didn’t you just
?”, well, at that point I only had one credit đŸ’đŸ»â€â™€ïž The biggest mistakes in that game, I made five turns earlier.

I had “Whole Lotta Nothing”, which is an event-driven Kit deck. I removed the Yogsucker package and replaced it with three Legworks, but keeping the Test Run Scavenge Femme Fatale package. I lost two or three games but managed to get one win via (of course) Indexing.

On the corp side the games were a li’l more fun given Barney’s creative and fun runner rigs. I was representing Harmony Medtech with three Global Food Initiatives (a key card), two Future Perfects and one Utopia Fragment. My trap package was the same (Junebugs, Snares and Overwriters) but I had changed out the icies and the econ package; replacing the giraffes with Shipments from SanSan, and I also have Green Level Clearances rather than Restructures. What a card! You only net a single CE (it’s a double so you pay three CE for four) but the tempo and timing of that money can be so clutch. Although maybe I’m kidding myself and it’s better to just not get so far up against the wall that I’m wishin’ and hopin’ for a shipment? After all, I didn’t get any wins.

On the ice side, I put in Chums and TL;DR mostly for how fun they are. I put two TL;DR in front of a Neural Katana. Fun fun fun ♄ I also swapped the Quandaries for Snowflakes since I was already so codegate heavy but that was a mistake since that made me fold completely to fracters.

Another fun thing that happened was that I fasttracked a Utopia Fragment and it turned out that it was on top of R&D so if I had just consulted I would’ve gotten it to HQ and I coulda saved myself the Fast Track! I think it’s a mark of a good game when the mechanics themselves, rather than the flavor, are fun or lead to laughs.

Of course we also dedicated some time to our two ongoing unfinished conversations:

The big one is: does the runner ID card (and heap and stack) belong down in the resource row or up in the hardware row like God intended? This is something that drives me so crazy. I wash my hands to keep away from Satan. At least we’re in agreement that the hardware row is between the resource row and the program row, unlike Jinteki.net.

And then the other, less important but still unsettled disagreement is about NSG, an organization that he has more or less accepted but I still have qualms, coming from some sorta foss/warez purity perspective where I’m salty that they don’t upload full-rez/full-bleed card faces, instead relying on their own for-profit-printing and some sorta have-the-cake-and-eat-it-too idea of what it means to be a fan driven game company trying to convey abandonware bona fides while also keeping the stewardship reigns tighter than a tarball cathedral.

I dunno. Maybe WotC/Talsorian’s third attempt at some sorta Netrunner 2077 (made impossible by NSG squatting the game) woulda sucked, heaven knows they’ve made some shortlived, less-than-stellar card games since nothing else they make can come close to the 800-pound Magic gorilla, wheras NSG has kept the game alive & well & supported. And I ask myself “I’m normally so damn punk and in favor of squatting and lifting and hitching and hijacking so why not this time?” and it’s because while they (figuratively speaking) disassembled the source code, they didn’t release it. MNeMiC’s cards are part of what made me interested in Netrunner again (and NSGs name change was also a good thing). It’s like how the fact that someone else could compile and install Dreamwidth makes LiveJournal look less bad. MNeMiC’s cards often have pirated art, the whole set a complete wild pirate job, but then the end result is fully made available to you for your own print runs.

I haven’t gotten onboard with PICO-8 or Cohost: I just don’t get it. I just don’t understand this “indie” twilight zone of suck between FOSS and megacorp. Maybe there’s a whiny entitled hole in my head where appriciative admiration for indies and scrappy entrepeneurs and startups was supposed to go, and I accidentally filled that hole with public libraries and git repos.

In Barney’s defense, he didn’t know that they don’t provide full-bleed, full-rez (to the point that fans are trying to recreate printable cards with ML upscalers and border generators). To his defense and to NSG’s undefense, because the fact that they’re not clear about what aspects of their project are proprietary is part of the problem here. It’s less fan-owned and more owned by one group of fans.

I’m super cool with them wanting to have their own card backs, CoC, and organized play (and banlists). As free as Debian is, if some scammers would start falsely saying “we speak for official Debian”, heads would rightly roll. I don’t want NSG to loosen the reigns to the extent that people could falsely say “we speak for official Null Signal Games” when they aren’t. On the flipside, they have been interpreted by many as if they were “speaking for official Netrunner” and while they make some efforts to disclaim that, they’ve also put themselves in a position where that impression keeps happening again and again.

FFG: “Lalala just another day making Netrunner cards”

WotC ior Talsorian: “Not so fast! Because you can suddenly no longer have the license at that price!”

NSG: “lol we don’t need no stinking license”

If what NSG is doing were completely untangled legally, FFG could’ve just kept going. Ergo it’s a hijack. Which I woulda been cool with (just what part of “be gay do crimes” don’t I understand?) if that then would’ve been an “it’s free now! We stole it and made it free!” but they then only made it half of the way free
!? The school of the “Steal from the rich, give to the hey look over there! [Sneaks away]”
?

That’s also why I feel like the MNeMiC cards can be the beginning of a redemption arc for the fan-run era of Netrunner. Add them to netrunnerdb.

GQP invented that dems wanna ban gas stoves (even though the new regulations still would allow 97% of installed stoves) and are now spending so much time and effort shadowboxing against that fiction.

Thing is, I wish they had banned gas stoves for real. Although burning methane is way less bad than letting it leak out into the atmosphere, so it’s not a clear-cut decision. (Fracking it out of the ground, or producing it, is for sure bad.) Whatever road we head down I feel like saving the planet should be more important than the art of cooking for the simple reason that being able to cook at all requires a planet to be on. One of the many ways I’ve ruined Netrunner is that even though my Replicating Perfection deck is undefeated, I’ve built a new corp deck with a much worse identity (Harmony Medtech) that keeps losing and isn’t very fun to play again since it’s so bad and has way too little ice and way too many Hedge Funds and Celebrity Gifts.

But today I managed to get in a win against Halo with it. He went 1–1 with Maxx against it. After bouncing off a Himitsu-Baku, he rebirthed into Quetzal, only to learn that behind every great Himitsu-Baku there is
another Himitsu-Baku. I was five points behind but after scoring a Mushin-no-Shin’ed Future Perfect I could Fast Track into a winning Global Food Initiative.

(The preceding game I got steamrolled. Indexing is a helluva drug.)

On the runner side, I played Kit “Holy Shit” Peddler vs New Angeles Sol and won two, sandwiching one early scoop after bouncing off an R&D glacier after keeping a hand with two Notoriety and no breakers. So a 3–2 record overall. Fun fun fun.♄

I’ve been trying out a sucker/Yog.0 rig and it’s not great. MU is too tight. But I also put in the Scavenge/Test Run/Femme Fatale combo and Halo pointed out that Scavenge could be used to move the “flies” (our pet name for Cyber Cypher).

My fave card in my green “Whole Lotta Nothing” Kit deck has always been Inti, and this was a match where it really shone. R&D, HQ, and one remote were all double iced (R&D was triple iced) but the inner icies were Resistors and Wraparounds. GG♄♄♄
