I’ve had a strange and long-awaited burst of enthusiasm for my long-running technical responsibilities.
First, I retired the HP MicroServer that I’d bought in 2011 in frustration at consumer-grade NASes being /terrible/, but also because I wanted to keep my long-running ZFS pool going. I’d built a new server in mid-2020 while we waited out our pandemic lockdowns - I figured it would be my last ever x86 box, as the future seemed to focus on arm64. That still feels true, though I don’t yet have anything better than a Raspberry Pi. All in good time. Meanwhile, I’d moved some services over, but somehow couldn’t find the energy to make the final push. Now it’s done.
Next, the shared-/self-hosting server I’ve run for a good friend for…almost 24 years now(!). A stable NBN connection meant I had the ability to run it at home again, and I reckoned we could run the necessary services just fine on a Raspberry Pi 4 with an SSD attached - it’s mostly low-traffic e-mail and some archival websites. After contacting many of the folks who previously used it to try and whittle things down a bit to the people who really were still using it, I migrated some domains over to the new one, and left it at that while waiting to get confirmation from a few others…This also dragged on a bit - I didn’t have the energy to push hard on finishing this one, either.
But wait, there’s more! /Another/ shared-hosting server I run with a group of friends also needs an upgrade. I’ve finally found the energy to push on that, too, and it should be done soon.
Over the past decade, my day-job evolved to the point of being far, far away from hands-on work like this - it takes me time to context-switch all the knowledge back into my brain, and even then I can only occasionally find the mood. I’ll ride it while I can.
