First published in 1867 in 'Dealings With the Fairies'. This is my favorite fairy story by MacDonald. It is easy to see my own life echoed here, with magic and fantasy filling childhood, the comfortable but mundane travels through the valley of shadows, and the journey's trying but triumphant conclusion.
