eRacer

What is this game?

eRacer (sometimes called e-Racer) is yet another old racing game, one which did not age very well just judging by the title alone, but I was curious about it.

e-Racer is a GT arcade racing game in which the player competes against computer opponents or other human players online in eight different cars. The single player game consists of an Arcade mode and a Championship mode. Online, players are able to compete in challenges, join forces with other player for co-operative play, as well as download new tracks and cars. The game also has support for saving replays that can be sent by mail to friends.

Sending replays by mail? How adorable.

Did I enjoy playing it?

Not really. Physics take some time to master (it took me too many tries to win the first race...), and then get fairly boring afterwards, as there are only 7 or 8 cars and every one of them feels about the same. I can appreciate old car racing games, but this is certainly no Gran Turismo. The AI opponents drive as if on rails, hitting you and spinning you out with zero hesitation. This must have been a very sub-par game for 2001, having come out around the same time as NFS Hot Pursuit 2 and Gran Turismo 3. The main reason why I bought it was because, once again, this is one of the few older racing games still available for purchase today (even if only on the obscure ZOOM store, where I also got my copy of Race Driver: Grid not too long ago) *5/10*, I regret spending those 3 dollars and more than 3 hours of my time.

Was this worth booting into Windows for? I don't think so.

Playing it on Linux, or low-spec hardware?

I spent about an hour trying to get it to run under Wine, with no luck. That may or may not have to do with the old video codecs used by the game. Eventually gave up and just used Windows for this.
